Hi everyone! My name is Abigail Fletcher, but I go by Abby. My preferred pronouns are she/her. I am from Syracuse, New York which is about 5 hours from JCU.
I would love to teach at the 2nd or 3rd grade level and I do not have a preferred subject. I’d love to teach them all. I am very into sports! I love going golfing and playing tennis. I am also a big new York Yankees fan!! I am also in Chi Omega at John Carroll!! In my free time I am usually at my family’s lake house in the Thousand Islands. Something that matters most to me is my family. I am an only child so I am very close with all of my relatives. A book that is essential to me would have to be the Bible. I enjoy going to church every Sunday and I think the Bible is a good representation of that. I try and read it everyday and have some time for reflection because my faith is very important to me.
Personally, I believe that I would need to have some sort of relationship with my peers and professor to be able to take intellectual and creative risks in a college classroom. I would also need to feel like I would not be judged or ridiculed for anything as well. I think forming a positive environment would allow anyone to feel comfortable being themselves and would allow their creativity to flow.
Something that I think is a challenge in the education field today is having to teach remotely. There are a lot of poor areas across the United States and a lot of these children do not have access to a computer to attend class or only have one computer and have to share with other siblings or family members. I feel like COVID is not really going anywhere anytime soon and teachers are struggling having to teach remotely. Also, many parents are hesitant to send their children back to school if they have the option, because they do not want to risk spreading the virus to their family. I feel that especially for kids in elementary school it is vital that they are at school and having that interaction with each other. This is a huge thing they are missing out on with having to be learning remotely.
My question for Dr. Shutkin is what made you want to go into the education field?
Thanks for reading!!! 🙂
